Lely Nordic launches automatic milk filter for Astronaut milking robots

A new filter solution, awarded three stars at Agromek Stars 2025, reduces labor time and eliminates the use of disposable filter socks.
Lely Nordic A/S is introducing a new automatic milk filter developed for Lely Astronaut milking robots. The system filters milk through a stainless-steel membrane with microscopic holes, removing the need for traditional filter socks. Cleaning is fully automated and integrated into the robot’s three daily main wash cycles, significantly reducing manual labor for the farmer.
The automatic milk filter monitors pressure during operation, and if the pressure exceeds a set threshold, an automatic rinse is triggered. This typically occurs when the filter becomes partially clogged by bedding material or milk impurities. Manual maintenance is limited to a brief cleaning every 14 days – a task that takes less than 10 minutes. At the same time, the purchase and disposal of single-use filters is eliminated, reducing operating costs and waste.
The Agromek jury highlights that the solution combines dairy industry technology with modern automation:
- The Lely automatic milk filter filters the milk through a stainless steel filter with microscopic holes without the use of a filter bag. The daily work of changing filters is significantly reduced, as the filter only needs to be checked and cleaned manually once every 14 days. At the same time, financial savings are achieved on the purchase of filter bags, the Jury states, awarding the innovation three stars.
The system can be connected to up to four Lely Astronaut milking robots and ensures more efficient, hygienic, and sustainable milking. By eliminating disposable filters and minimizing manual maintenance, Lely Nordic demonstrates how automation can improve both operations and environmental performance in modern dairy production.
