Multiple field operations cost time, fuel and capacity. The XTill® slurry injector combines targeted soil cultivation with precise slurry placement, allowing several tasks to be completed in a single pass. PowerGear has tested the technology under Danish field conditions.
Fewer passes and improved slurry utilisation
Conventional establishment of row crops can require several passes for soil cultivation, fertilisation and seedbed preparation. This increases both working time and the load on the soil.
The XTill slurry injector works according to the Strip Till principle. Only the strips where the crop will be established are cultivated. At the same time, slurry is placed below the surface close to the future root zone.
Soil loosening, seedbed preparation and slurry placement are therefore combined in a single operation. This can reduce the number of passes and help farmers and contractors make better use of their time and machinery.
Slurry is placed in the root zone
Slurry is a valuable source of nutrients, but its value depends on how precisely it is applied.
With the XTill slurry injector, the slurry placement depth can be adjusted independently of the cultivation depth. The slurry can also be deposited at two different depths. This allows placement to be adapted to the crop, soil conditions and cultivation strategy.
A DosiMat DMX precision distributor supplies slurry evenly to the individual rows. It achieves uniform nutrient distribution with a coefficient of variation below 5 per cent.
Targeted placement makes the nutrients available close to the roots and can reduce nutrient losses and the need for additional mineral fertiliser.
Each row unit follows the ground
Each row unit is mounted on a parallelogram linkage, helping to maintain a consistent working depth across the field.
First, a disc coulter cuts through crop residues and vegetation. Star-shaped clearing discs then remove material from the strip to be cultivated. The injection tine loosens the soil before the slurry is placed in an underground depot at the required depth.
Ridging discs guide the soil back into the cultivated strip, while press wheels shape and reconsolidate the seedbed. A hydraulic overload protection system protects the injection tines if they encounter stones or other obstacles.
Uncultivated strips protect the soil
The soil between the cultivated strips remains undisturbed. Crop residues on the surface can help protect against erosion and evaporation while preserving the soil structure and pores.
The cultivated strips can also warm up more quickly, creating favourable conditions for germination and root development. The Strip Till method therefore combines targeted soil cultivation with minimal disturbance of the remaining field surface.
XTill VarioCrop can be adjusted to row spacings from 45 to 75 cm, allowing it to be used for different row crops and growing conditions.
