Why are more farmers producing their own feed?

For many livestock farmers, feed is one of the biggest costs in production. But does feed necessarily have to be bought ready-mixed?

At Boldinggaard Hønseri, free-range egg producer Klaus Jørgensen chose a different approach. In 2016, he invested in a SKIOLD feed mill and began producing a large proportion of the feed for his hens himself.

Today, he produces around 60–65 per cent of the approximately 2,500 tonnes of feed that the hens consume each year. With his own grain production, a flexible milling and mixing plant, and the ability to manage feed production himself, he has gained greater control over raw materials, feed and finances.

And this is not only relevant for pig farmers.

In-house feed production can also be of interest to poultry farmers and other livestock producers who want greater control over their feed and better utilisation of their own raw materials.
