Röhren- und Pumpenwerk Bauer Gesellschaft m.b.H., non-contact field soil moisture measurement - DANISH NEWS

Product description:
CosmoField. This system is installed in the field and measures soil moisture without any physical contact with the soil. It works by detecting naturally occurring neutrons in the atmosphere. The unit is positioned in the centre of a field of approximately 10 hectares, where it measures the number of neutrons reaching the soil surface and the number reflected back. The more moist the soil is, the fewer neutrons are reflected. Using this information, the farmer can monitor on a smartphone or PC exactly when it is time to irrigate, sow or harvest.
Expert description:
A system for measuring soil moisture without the use of physical sensors in the soil, designed to support irrigation management. The CosmoField system determines soil moisture by measuring incoming atmospheric neutrons and the number reflected from the soil surface. The more moist the soil is, the fewer neutrons are reflected.
The sensor is positioned 1.5-2 metres above the ground and requires neither physical contact with nor installation in the soil. The purpose of the system is to measure and display the moisture deficit across the area, providing a quick and straightforward overview of irrigation requirements.
Bauer states that a single sensor can cover an area of up to 10 hectares. The CosmoField system can also be integrated with the control system of Bauer pivot irrigators. This allows the user to define upper and lower soil moisture thresholds for irrigated fields. Based on these values, the system automatically controls water application, ensuring that neither too little nor too much water is applied.
The economic value of the CosmoField system stems both from applying the optimum amount of irrigation water and from avoiding the financial losses associated with under-irrigation as well as over-irrigation.
