Product description:
With this patented product, MSR Plant Technology ApS addresses the challenge of disease spread following potato haulm destruction, at a time when options for chemical desiccation using pesticides are becoming increasingly limited. The innovation is an addition to the company’s Crown Crusher system. While operating the Crown Crusher, lime is applied simultaneously. The lime may contribute to disease-free seed potatoes and improved storage quality of the harvested crop for ongoing delivery. The product was operated as a prototype with a customer during 2025 and 2026 as part of a GUDP project.

Expert description:
MSR’s new system disinfects potato stems and the soil surface on top of the potato ridge using a slurry of hydrated lime, which is sprayed onto and immediately behind the Crown Crusher’s working unit. As a result, when potato growth is terminated by the Crown Crusher, lime is simultaneously applied for disinfection purposes.
By performing both operations at the same time as mechanical haulm destruction, the disinfecting effect is achieved immediately in connection with growth termination. In addition, one field pass is eliminated. It is also innovative that the disinfection is carried out using a lime product that simultaneously acts as a soil conditioner by contributing to the regulation of soil pH.
The purpose of the disinfection is particularly to reduce the spread of blackleg disease and also to limit the transmission of blackleg and late blight. By applying lime to the top of the potato ridge, a form of lime crust is created which helps prevent disease organisms from infiltrating the ridge and reaching the potato tubers. The system is both patented and currently undergoing testing at Aarhus University.
