New culling ranking in DMS assesses cows’ future economic value

New decision-support tool from SEGES Innovation, Viking Data- og Ydelsesservice and SimHerd is awarded a three-star Danish News at Agromek Stars.

VikingDanmark presents a new culling ranking tool in DMS designed to help dairy producers make better decisions about which cows should remain in the herd, and which should be culled. Rather than relying solely on historical performance, the tool evaluates each cow’s expected future economic potential.

The ranking is based on SimHerd’s simulation model and uses data including milk recording results, previous disease treatments, pregnancy status, the cow’s potential slaughter value and the genetic value of future calves. This provides a broader basis for evaluation than current milk yield alone.

To receive a future value assessment, a cow must have at least one milk recording completed a minimum of 75 days after calving. The animals are then ranked within the herd on a scale from -100 to 100. Cows with the highest scores are considered to have the greatest future economic potential, while those with the lowest scores are expected to deliver a lower future return.

The ranking is displayed both as a column in the culling list and in a dashboard where users can filter groups of animals and view relevant details for individual cows. This provides farmers with a more nuanced basis for decision-making when selecting cull cows.

Three-star Danish News

Agromek’s judging panel has awarded the solution three stars and classified it as a Danish News. In its final assessment, the panel highlighted that the tool shifts the focus from past performance to the cow’s future economic potential:

“With the Viking Culling Ranking, each cow’s future economic potential is assessed and ranked through SimHerd using data from DMS, milk recording, current slaughter value and other relevant parameters. This provides a better basis for making the right decisions when selecting cull cows.”

The solution has been developed by SEGES Innovation, Viking Data- og Ydelsesservice and SimHerd and is intended to provide dairy producers with a more objective and forward-looking basis for culling decisions in day-to-day herd management.
