MSR Plant Technology presents CC +Lime for mechanical haulm destruction in potatoes

Patented solution combines the Crown Crusher with lime treatment and is awarded a three-star Europe News at Agromek.

MSR Plant Technology ApS presents CC +Lime, a new addition to the company’s Crown Crusher for mechanical haulm destruction in potatoes. The solution combines haulm destruction with the application of hydrated lime slurry to potato stems and the soil surface of the potato ridge.

The aim is to reduce the risk of disease transmission, particularly blackleg and late blight, during the period between haulm destruction and harvesting. The lime is applied on and immediately behind the Crown Crusher’s working unit, allowing the treatment to be carried out in the same operation as the mechanical haulm destruction.

According to the product description, the lime forms a protective layer on top of the potato ridge, helping to prevent spores and bacteria from being washed down to the tubers. At the same time, the crushing equipment and material flow are treated with lime. By combining several processes in a single pass, the need for additional field operations is reduced.

The hydrated lime used also functions as a soil conditioner and may contribute to the regulation of soil pH. The system is patented and currently undergoing trials at Aarhus University.

Three-star Europe News

Agromek’s judging panel has awarded the solution three stars and classified it as a Europe News. The expert evaluation particularly highlights the combination of mechanical haulm destruction and lime treatment as a significant innovation:

“By carrying out the task simultaneously with mechanical haulm destruction, the disinfecting effect is achieved immediately alongside the haulm destruction process. In addition, one field pass is eliminated. The fact that the disinfection is performed using a lime product that also serves as a soil conditioner by helping to regulate soil pH is also new.”

CC +Lime combines haulm destruction and lime treatment in a single operation and is aimed at potato growers seeking to limit disease transmission while reducing the number of field passes.
