Højgaards combines screw press and microfiltration for improved slurry utilisation

Process solution separates slurry into fractions tailored for on-farm fertilisation and transport to biogas plants and is awarded a two-star Agromek News.

Højgaards ApS presents an automated process for the separation and further treatment of slurry from both cattle and sow/piglet production. The solution combines a screw press and microfiltration, among other technologies, to distribute nutrients and organic matter between different fractions.
When processing cattle slurry, Højgaards aims to concentrate up to 60% of the organic matter in a fibre fraction that can be transported to a biogas plant. The liquid fraction remains on the farm for use as fertiliser, while the microfilter removes additional organic matter, which is returned to and incorporated into the fibre fraction.
For slurry from sows and piglets, the same principle is used to create a more concentrated fraction with sufficient biogas potential for transport to biogas facilities. At the same time, the filtrate achieves a lower phosphorus content and can be used as fertiliser on the farm.
Højgaards highlights that the process is designed to improve the nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio in the fraction used as fertiliser. Particularly for cattle slurry, the lower viscosity is also expected to improve field utilisation and reduce the risk of slurry residues remaining on grass crops.
Agromek’s judging panel has awarded the solution two stars. In its final assessment, the panel highlighted microfiltration as an interesting development of farm-based slurry separation.
“With microfiltration, it is possible to produce a fertiliser product with a lower dry matter content and an improved N:P ratio compared with untreated slurry or slurry separated solely by a screw press,” the judging panel noted.
