FarmDroid FD60 expands autonomous sowing and weeding to larger acreages

A new autonomous sowing and weeding robot with an integrated hybrid system and increased capacity is recognised as a two-star Agromek innovation.
Yding Smedie & Maskiner A/S presents FarmDroid FD60, an autonomous robot for sowing and mechanical weeding of row crops. The robot records the GPS position of each individual seed during sowing and subsequently uses the stored positions for selective weeding without the use of cameras or image recognition technology.
FD60 builds on FarmDroid’s existing concept but has been developed to deliver greater capacity and support a wider range of crops. According to the product description, the sowing system handles seed sizes from 0.8 to 14 mm, and the robot can be configured with up to 20 rows and a working width of up to 6.75 metres.
A key innovation is the integrated hybrid system, featuring eight solar panels, a 23.5 kWh battery and an automatic 3 kW gasoline driven range extender. This combination is designed to keep the robot operating for up to 24 hours a day, with a stated capacity of up to 18 hectares per day and 60 hectares per season.
Integrated hybrid system earns two stars
The Agromek judging panel has awarded FD60 two stars. In its final assessment, the panel particularly highlights the hybrid system and the increased capacity as significant and practical improvements, while noting that the core concept continues to build on FarmDroid’s existing technology.
“FD60 is awarded two out of three stars, primarily because of its integrated hybrid system. The combination of eight solar panels, a 23.5 kWh battery and an automatic range extender make it possible to keep the robot operating for up to 24 hours a day. Together with the increased capacity, this makes the solution relevant for a broader range of larger farming businesses,” the judging panel concludes.
FarmDroid also states that FD60 can work with crops including sugar beet, onions, lentils, quinoa, chicory, spinach, maize and green beans.
