Adjustable nozzle aims to optimise sand separation in slurry

Stjernholm’s patented nozzle automatically adjusts the hydro cyclone outlet according to dry matter content and flow rate and is awarded a two-star Agromek News.

Stjernholm A/S has developed a patented adjustable nozzle for the company’s agricultural sand washer. The nozzle automatically regulates the outlet opening in the hydro cyclone based on measurements of dry matter content and flow rate in the incoming slurry, allowing the separation process to be continuously adapted to current operating conditions.
In the hydro cyclone, the slurry is fed tangentially into the unit, causing the liquid to separate from sand, sludge and other solid materials. The cleaned liquid exits through the overflow, while the solid fraction is discharged through the outlet at the bottom. The new nozzle is manufactured from a flexible material, with an actuator and clamping ring that adjust the opening uniformly.
According to Stjernholm, the automatic regulation provides more stable separation, faster adjustment during start-up and improved adaptation when the composition of the slurry varies. The company also highlights the potential for shorter operating times and reduced water and energy consumption.
The solution has been developed to maintain a high and more consistent concentration of solids in the fraction transferred to the sand washer. Stjernholm states that the system is capable of separating fine sand particles and creating the conditions for efficient and stable sand separation.
Agromek’s judging panel has awarded the adjustable nozzle two stars. In its final assessment, the panel particularly noted that conventional hydro cyclones use a fixed outlet nozzle, whereas the new solution can reduce start-up time and continuously adapt to the characteristics of the incoming slurry.
“With the adjustable nozzle, start-up time can be reduced, enabling effective sand and slurry separation to be achieved more quickly. At the same time, the nozzle can be adapted to the current slurry input, contributing to improved separation and shorter operating times,” the judging panel stated.
