BoviWalk Launches New AI-driven Camera for Cow Lameness Scoring
21/10/2024
An innovative solution that enhances animal welfare and productivity through precise lameness monitoring has been recognized as a three-star European innovation at Agromek.
BoviWalk ApS introduces a groundbreaking solution for barn mechanization—an AI-driven camera that automatically identifies and classifies lame cows. When a cow returns from milking, a video surveillance camera captures the animal, and an ear tag reader identifies the cow. An advanced algorithm uses 20 points on the cow's body, such as the backline, head position, and leg posture, to assess lameness on a scale from 1 to 5. The system can even pinpoint which leg the cow is lame on.
The Agromek judges' panel highlights BoviWalk's new system as a breakthrough in the lameness monitoring market, awarding it a three-star European innovation:
- The BoviWalk system utilizes AI and camera technology for automatic lameness scoring, aiding farmers in timely detection of lame cows, thereby improving animal welfare and farm economics.
The system is described as a simple, user-friendly solution that is easy to integrate into existing barns, providing farmers with an effective tool to enhance daily operations and ensure timely treatment of lame cows. Additionally, it allows farmers to monitor a cow's lameness over a 14-day period via a web app, where all data and videos are accessible. Farmers can set custom alarm thresholds for when a cow should be reported as lame.
